BEWARE OF FAKE BESWICK ANIMALS!!
There have been a few reported cases of Fake Beswick Items occurring in Online Auction sites. A common reported instance is where an original Beswick item has been repainted.
For example a common Brown gloss item has been repainted to a Black gloss for a horse or foal. Since there were more Brown gloss horses and foals manufactured they are worth less than black coloured ones which were produced in lesser quantities.
There has been a couple of instances of rare colourways appearing often. Generally when the reference books and dealers say a particular model is rare then that should give you a hint. Examine closely and be suspicious of "rare" models appearing often.
Once again it is best to look at a seller's previous dealings and transactions to make you feel at ease that the item is either genuine Beswick and/or has not been repainted.
According to Harvey May (the author of the Beswick Price Guide) there have been some instances of people selling Beswick items that have been described as "genuine unrecorded pieces from Beswick". He claims that in 20 years of collecting and dealing with Beswick he has not come across an unrecorded Beswick model.
These fakes happened since the Beswick Factory shop sold some surplus Beswick imprinted bases. Other manufacturers then added a non beswick made figurine on the Beswick base and said it was an unrecorded model. It may be best to steer away from such items.
